Proportional representation

Letter to the Editor

June 21, 2006

We need more ideas represented in government to reflect the already present broad political spectrum of the general public.
For instance, many countries around the world engage in various forms of an electoral system called ''proportional representation.'' One includes a legislature in which political parties holding seats are proportioned by the votes cast for their candidates on Election Day. If Libertarian candidates receive five percent of the vote on Election Day, Libertarian representatives will hold five percent of the seats in the legislature. That way, bills up for a vote in Congress receive the consideration of the representatives of a broad segment of the people.
For more information on proportional representation, please go to ''Program for Representative Government,'' at www.fairvote.org.
