Ballot Box News: Montana: Term limits repeal could go to voters

"A state panel on Monday held hearings on two bills that would either repeal or ask voters to tweak term limits for state senators and representatives, with its sponsors saying the current system has made the Legislative branch of the government the weakest when it should be the strongest. Opponents, however, opposed the proposed legislation, saying the current system reflects a more citizen Legislature rather than a chamber filled with 'professional politicians.'"

The length of time a legislator is lawfully able to serve. (1)How long should a member of Congress serve? The Constitution set two years for a House term and six years for a Senate term but put no restriction on how often members could run for reelection. The House should have “an immediate dependence on, and an intimate sympathy with, the people,” James Madison wrote in the Federalist Papers. “Frequent elections are unquestionably the only policy by which this dependence and sympathy can be effectually secured.” Senators, by contrast, serve six–year terms to give them greater distance from the “sudden and violent passions” of public opinion.
