Civic engagement for the week of July 16-23, 2010:
Advocacy campaigns:
Activists have launched a national campaign to send a U.S. boat to Gaza that will sail with a flotilla of ships from Europe, Canada, India, South Africa, and parts of the Middle East this fall. Participants hope to break through the three-year Israeli naval blockade of Gaza. Blog
Petition drive to qualify the Tea Party for the Michigan ballot; allegation by a veteran petition manager that the drive to collect 38,024 valid signatures cost $120,000. The petition bears 59,000 signatures. Blog
With continued organizing and work from our affiliates and partners across the nation, we [USAction] can put America back to work and make sure corporations and the wealthy pay their fair share. Blog
Some suggestions you could do right now, which will soothe your anxieties because you will be doing something to address the issue you deeply care about; the pressure isn’t on your shoulders (yet) to organize a large effort or produce systemic community changes. Blog
The City of Seattle is launching 'Engage Seattle' a civic engagement initiative that will concentrate on three primary means of getting people involved with the city. Blog

Civic engagement for the week of July 16-23, 2010:
Advocacy resources:
Our nation's 70,000-plus grant-making foundations — which steward half a billion dollars of partially public money — have an opportunity to help solve pressing social problems by investing in grass-roots civic engagement and advocacy. Their commitment to democracy can save it; their failure may well doom it. Blog
Burson-Marsteller Study: "Social Media Use by U.S. Based Political Advocacy Groups," a new Evidence-Based study today looking at how some of the largest U.S.-based political advocacy groups like the NRA, MoveOn.org and AARP are using social media during the run-up to the crucial mid-term elections in Nov. Blog
Eight states now let voters with a state driver's license or state id register to vote online. They are Arizona, Washington, Kansas, Oregon, Louisiana, Colorado, Utah and Indiana. Blog
Rock the Vote's voter registration tool can be easily embedded on websites, blogs, Facebook pages, and MySpace profiles, allowing almost anyone to spread the word and help register voters. Blog
In June, 2010, Big Business interests shamelessly dealt our already depleted democracy a devastating blow by misleading California voters into approving Proposition 14, without their opponents being able to reach the people with rebuttals. This voter initiative provides that the November elections in that state for members of Congress and state elective offices are reserved only for the top two vote-garnering candidates in the June primary. Supporters of a “top two” scheme want to spread it throughout the country, with Michigan as the next stop. Already, Washington state enacted “top two” for the 2008 election. Blog
News that Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano's office allowed political appointees to review hundreds of public records requests is shameful. Political considerations have no place in the government's compliance with the Freedom of Information Act. Blog
World Alliance for Citizen Participation has launched a global virtual platform for knowledge development, sharing and learning on participatory governance, available at: www.pgexchange.org. Blog
WeGov.com will move from testing status to a full launch by the end of this month [July, 2010]. It bills itself as "the most comprehensive, nonpartisan platform for civic engagement, political participation, and organizational activism. . . . Our mission is to provide a place where citizens and groups can take REAL political action and make an impact." Blog

Civic engagement for the week of July 16-23, 2010:
Advocacy training:
"Citizens in Action: Tools for Gaining Input" 8-page brief from the National Association of Counties (NACo) is designed to provide county officials with a variety of options available in order to engage residents and garner meaningful citizen input. Blog
"In Search of Civility" 8-page issue brief from the National Association of Counties (NACo) provides an overview of current state of civil dialogue in local government and examples of how counties can ensure a civil dialogue during county meetings. Blog
What you need, where to go, what to do and how to make an impact for petitioning. Blog
For the conservative movement to succeed in the long term, newcomers and veterans need to understand [20] principles and that there is always something we can learn from someone else. Blog
You’re going to have to create [political passion] yourself, if that’s what it takes to get you and your neighbors to hit the streets, vote, and generally do stuff. Blog
Video of last week’s panel discussion for the book "Digital Activism Decoded." Blog
“Where is Democracy Headed?” (2008) is a report published by the Deliberative Democracy Consortium which summarizes more than four years of learnings about deliberation, decision-making, and problem-solving. Blog
"Digital Political Campaigning 101"- a terrifically detailed look at contemporary online campaigning. Blog
"How to Communicate Effectively with Congress," an advocacy classroom course for you to be an effective and active participant in your government. Blog
Regarding AmericaSpeaks' June 26 National Town Meeting on the nation's fiscal future, it would be safe to predict that fights would break out if you sat thousands of people together from across the political spectrum and asked them to talk about sensitive political questions. Instead, we saw that people had the courage to sit down with one another and really listen to each other. There was plenty of disagreement, but the disagreements tended to be civil and respectful. Civic engagement for the week of July 16-23, 2010:
Domestic surveillance:
Domestic surveillance:
EPIC has filed a Freedom of Information Act request with the National Security Agency regarding the new secret cybersecurity program known as "Perfect Citizen." Blog
The National Security Agency (NSA) recently released a secret domestic surveillance technology, ironically called the Perfect Citizen. The technology monitors nuclear power plants, train stations, and the electric power grid to safeguard against cyber-assaults.
If Perfect Citizen can survey these places, what will stop them from spying on everyday citizens? Blog
The Washington Post released Top Secret America, a major expose of government surveillance operations. The first article in the series, “A hidden world, growing beyond control,” reveals secrecy and waste pervading massive redundancy, a disturbing lack of coordination among overlapping federal agencies, apparent profiteering, and outright counter-productivity. Blog
Political surveillance and harassment by U.S. law enforcement agencies are on the rise with incidents reported in at least 33 states since 9/11, according to a review by the American Civil Liberties Union. The ACLU also announced the launch of a new “Spyfiles” web hub on domestic political surveillance. Blog
